To The Mix has snapping grooves and a sweet clubby sound. The bass is tight, the keyboards are electric, and the rhythms are great — never forced or stiffand always flowing with a sense of soul that's head and shoulders above most of the group's contemporaries. The sound of Chicago acid house, all filtered through the energy of the west coast rave scene — which was home to DJ Spun and Dhyan Moller when they recorded these tracks!

We'll be the first to admit that the piano and compositions of John Lewis can sometimes be a bit stiff and academic — but that's definitely not the case on this great little record! Cedar Walton's playing the piano parts, which probably helps the groove a bit, and the group's tight hard sound puts in a "bottom" that you'd hardly hear when listening to John Lewis with the MJQ.

In fact, Lewis isn't even on the record — just against the current gravity album art er in the title because he contributed the compositions — classics that include "Odds Against Tomorrow", "Bel", "Milano", and "New York 19". The whole thing's brilliant — filled with well-chosen tunes and some sublime performances by all players — and cuts include a 10 minute version of Miles Davis' "Neo", plus "Minor Blues", "Stella By Starlight", "Lullaby Of Jazzland", and "Blues Waltz". One of Curtis Mayfield's least-known albums — a post-Curtom date that originally got small indie circulation, yet one that shows that Curtis was still going strong into the 80s!

Half the set echoes the upbeat dancefloor modes of the late Curtom years — the club-oriented groovers that Mayfield picked up during the disco years, but still managed to deliver with a surprising degree of soul, thanks to his classic vocals.

Other tunes have a bit more of an 80s groove at points, but still a lot more warmth than chart soul of the time — minimal beats and keys, and rhythm that's never too stiff. There's a mix of styles here — some rough rocking numbers that are a bit stiffmixed with some really doorie unplugged tunes that get at Brian Wilson's new sensitivities — tunes like "Girl Don't Tell Me", "You're So Good To Me", "Summer Means New Love", and "Let Him Run Wild" — all complicated in subtle ways, with a great sense of tension underneath.

As the title implies, the album's based around Geoff's own compositions — songs that are wonderfully fluid, with more than enough space for individual expression from the strong lineup — but also really cohesive, with this beautiful feeling from the ensemble as a whole — this majestic sensibility, but one that's never stiff at all — really coming together in a way that might make this the best Bradfield outing to date.

Killer Christmas work from Tony Bennett — a set recorded in the 60s, but a classic that endures strongly over the years! Tony's vocals are superb here — that nicely matured style that's kept him in front of younger ears over the years — and the backings are somewhat traditional, but never stiff or cliched. Robert Farnon adds in some strings and chorus bits at times, but some of the best cuts have a jazzier flavor — and even the fuller-styled numbers fall back nicely to let Bennett's vocals dominate up front.

As always with Frisina, even when the rhythms are programmed, they're never too stiff — as the man draws more inspiration from classic Latin sounds than most of his producer contemporaries, and really knows how to make things sound great. CD Out of print first pressing.

Rawly melodic sounds from the London-based Primitive Parts — and such a perfect mix of jagged, post punkish guitars and barbed pop sensibility! In their own words, the group kind of set out to sound something like if Stiff Record came about in the 60s, which is probably as apt a description as we could come up with, and it's sure as hell a welcome approach!

The Trouble In Mind label so often introduces us to great new bands that are influenced by the best semi-underground rock of the 60s onward, but are ultimately original. Strong stuff! The roundness of Wright's bass makes the best cuts on the album even better — as he rolls around with a subtle sense of soul that really helps Alexander step into the 70s nicely — getting past some of the stiff ness of 60s albums and even hitting a few funky notes at times! A great set in the short run of classics that Carl Anderson cut for Columbia Records in the s — albums that never cracked the charts that strongly at the time, but which have gone on to be remembered well over the years!

On this record, Anderson nicely balances a tight groove with some looser, more personal vocals — in the process avoiding some of the stiff er cliches of the Columbia hitmaking crowd lynda video the time — and reminding us that the label could still come up with classy, well-rounded charice pempengco titanium mp3 efforts like this!
